I’ve been interested in conservation and environmental causes ever since childhood. Once I started to do field recording I became more involved, reading many books on the subject, supporting local and global initiatives and even taking part in research/surveys as much as my busy schedule allowed.

Field recording expedition to Ethiopia

Earlier this year I was reading a book about rainforest ecosystems and I learned about Cloud Forests. These are specific types of rainforests that generally occur at high altitude and harbor excellent biodiversity. Incidentally the humidity and lack of scorching heat makes these forests the best place for wild coffee to grow. I’m quite fond of coffee and wildlife so this aspect stuck to mind.

I recently went on a week-long trip to a place called the Black River, located in Central Sweden. If you've been following me for a while, you might remember that I already visited this place last year and even used recordings I made there in the Wetland Atmosphere library.

Quick update from me before I leave on my next trip. I spent the second half of March in the United States, attending GDC and meeting numerous awesome people. I also managed to squeeze in a few days of recording in New York as detailed in my last blog post.

Field recording tools of the trade

At the lower end of the price spectrum, field recording equipment will yield relatively similar results. A few dB of self noise won’t make a huge difference if the recordist hasn’t mastered the other tools of the trade, the ones that can’t be bought. Let’s examine some lesser known but rather more important tools that are sure to improve your field recording practice.

Freestyle field recording is a flexible approach to recording nature and wildlife sounds outside of the studio or any controlled environment, developed by George Vlad. While traditional methods are prescriptive and rigid, Freestyle field recording encourages deliberate experimentation and a very organic workflow.
