Free sound effects - Mindful Audio freebies 2019

December 16, 2019

Over the past year I’ve had the immense privilege of visiting and recording pristine soundscapes in very remote places. You can read about my expedtions on the blog here and you can watch some of my exploits on Youtube. A̶s̶ ̶a̶ ̶h̶o̶l̶i̶d̶a̶y̶ ̶p̶r̶e̶s̶e̶n̶t̶ ̶I̶’̶m̶ ̶g̶i̶v̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶a̶w̶a̶y̶ ̶a̶ ̶s̶e̶l̶e̶c̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶1̶6̶ ̶s̶o̶u̶n̶d̶s̶c̶a̶p̶e̶s̶.̶ Now that the holidays are over you can still get the freebies but you will have to buy me a coffee to receive the download links.

If you find these recordings useful you are more than welcome to support me by:

  • buying my paid sound effects libraries (they’re on sale!)

  • becoming a Patreon supporter (goodies available for patrons)

Your support will help me record more rare sounds and is greatly appreciated. Don’t worry if you cannot afford it though. You can still spread the word on social media. Word of mouth is very powerful and it will help me reach more people.

The Holiday Freebies sound effects library has become a bit of a tradition since 2016 when I started it and I’m happy to annouce that this year’s edition is bigger and more awesome than ever. The recordings included have been captured in beautiful and untouched parts of the world:

  • Amazon rainforest

  • Congo Basin rainforest

  • Ethiopian cloud forest

  • Danakil depression in Ethiopia

  • Danube Delta and Letea Forest in Romania

File list available here.

These recordings come with commercial license and full terms can be accessed at https://mindful-audio.com/eula

Happy holidays everyone!
George

Field recording tools of the trade
Field recording tools of the trade

At the lower end of the price spectrum, field recording equipment will yield relatively similar results. A few dB of self noise won’t make a huge difference if the recordist hasn’t mastered the other tools of the trade, the ones that can’t be bought. Let’s examine some lesser known but rather more important tools that are sure to improve your field recording practice.

Introduction to Freestyle field recording
Introduction to Freestyle field recording

Freestyle field recording is a flexible approach to recording nature and wildlife sounds outside of the studio or any controlled environment, developed by George Vlad. While traditional methods are prescriptive and rigid, Freestyle field recording encourages deliberate experimentation and a very organic workflow.

Listening session at the House of Lords in Westminster

I recently received an invitation to play some of my soundscapes and to tell stories about conservation. While there’s nothing unusual about that, the setting was definitely novel for me.

The 2025 Soundscape Fund

How can field recording make a difference for conservation and environmental causes? I get this question a lot, and one of the answers is here. Once a year I team up with Thomas Rex Beverly and Andy Martin to raise money for environmental NGOs.
