How can field recording make a difference for conservation and environmental causes? I get this question a lot, and one of the answers is here. Once a year I team up with Thomas Rex Beverly and Andy Martin to raise money for environmental NGOs. We are offering some of our time and sound recordings to encourage donations. This year there are 3 huge prizes with a total value of more than $45,000! Check out the initiative and remember to share and donate please.
We have raised almost $15,000 over the past 7 years. 100% of the donations go to environmental causes. I chose to support Wild Bucovina because I’ve worked with them on the ground and I’ve seen the impact they have first-hand. They tirelessly go out into the mountains of Northern Romania almost every day of the year. They help protect native wildlife, they do outreach in schools and universities, and they keep an eye out for poaching and illegal logging.
This work takes a lot of physical effort, but it also requires constant financial backing. It takes a solid 4x4 to reach those remote areas, and once the roads are over you need solid boots and all weather kit. Binoculars, camera traps, drop rigs and other equipment are not cheap. Over the years I’ve managed to support them with consumables such as SD cards, cables, PiP microphones and such, but cash goes further in this part of the world. That’s why Wild Bucovina has been my cause of choice for the past 5 years. See them in action on their Youtube channel, and please remember to spread the word about the Soundscape Fund. Every donation matters, no matter how small. Happy holidays!
